Details

The Noviembre Console (2020) is a highly distinctive piece that seems to challenge the laws of gravity. Two oval forms hold its top aloft to create a sculptural console that’s also functional. Free from ornamentation, Joel Escalona’s design radiates with an organic materiality – in its pleasing shapes and beautiful, hand-sanded, solid white oak. Its pragmatic and poetic design was inspired by the creative thinking of Roman artist and sculptor Constantin Brancusi, who sought to uncover the essence of things through their raw beauty, which is exactly what Mexico City-based Escalona has achieved. Noviembre will add a grounded yet sculptural accent to an entryway or living space. Made in Mexico.

Joel Escalona

“I try to balance the pragmatic with the poetic,” says Joel Escalona. The Mexican designer draws references from personal experiences and different cultural inspirations in his work, which has shown at Art Basel, ICFF, Salone del Mobile Milano, and more. This upshot of his approach is a collection of furniture that feels at once sculptural and functional, and captivating in its craftsmanship.
