Fritz Haller And Paul Schaerer
Originally a Swiss hardware and lock business, USM was founded in 1885 by Ulrich Schaerer. In 1961, his grandson, Paul Schaerer, hired architect Fritz Haller to build a new factory and office space, which led to a series of modular furniture designed to adapt and expand as home and office needs changed. Now included in MoMA’s permanent collection, the USM Haller is an icon of modern design.
